On Tuesday, November 12, the girls’ lacrosse team gathered in Copeland Fieldhouse for an early pre-season meeting. Head Coach Elizabeth Lane Schaeffer announced that she would not be returning next season.
Lane Schaeffer, who has coached the girl's varsity lacrosse team at Milton High for almost a decade, has decided to leave the program. Lane Schaeffer and the team have faced many ups and downs during her tenure at Milton High School.
Last year, the team advanced to the first round of the Division 2 MIAA tournament, a goal Lane Schaeffer and the players set at their first practice.
When the players asked the coach why she had left, she explained that she had been offered a JV position at Norwell, the town where she works.
The decision didn’t come easily to Lane Schaeffer. When asked how she felt about her choice, she stated it was an emotional and hard decision. She said, “I will really miss coaching you and the other players at Milton High School.”
She has formed strong connections with every player, watching them grow as not only athletes but also as individuals.
The players share this feeling as well. Sophomore Georgia Tretinik stated, “Coach built the team into a sisterhood, a family. It’s where I met new friends, and it’s where I found my passion.” She went on to say that Coach Lane Schaeffer “cares about every single one of us.”
Junior Varsity coach Jackie Connors will also be parting ways with the program.
After a rough 4-14 season, the Wildcats look forward to the coming spring, when they can hope to rebuild the program and improve their record. While the hunt for the new coach begins, Lane Schaeffer has left the team in the good hands of senior captains Lucie Lloyd-Farber and Sophie McFadden.
